A million more Epstein files uncovered; US lawmakers slam Trump administration’s ‘illegal’ withholding

The US Justice Department says it has uncovered more than one million additional documents tied to the Jeffrey Epstein investigation, a disclosure that comes amid mounting condemnation from lawmakers and victims that the administration violated the law by withholding records from the public.

The DoJ said it had discovered over a million more documents potentially related to the investigation of the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein after being sharply criticized for “violating the law” for releasing only a portion of the heavily redacted documents related to the file.

A group of alleged victims of Epstein said earlier this week the DOJ "has violated the law, both by withholding massive quantities of documents, and by failing to redact survivor identities.”

The FBI and the US attorney’s office in the Southern District of New York, which oversaw the investigations into Epstein and his longtime accomplice in the crimes, Ghislaine Maxwell, had informed the DoJ “that they have uncovered over a million more documents potentially related to the Jeffrey Epstein case.”

The DoJ announced on Wednesday that the increased number of documents in the Epstein file will lengthen the time it will take to release the material.

Congress had given the DoJ until last Friday to release the files, and a batch of about 100,000 pages was released that day. But over the weekend, the deputy attorney general, Todd Blanche, said that about a million more pages of information were being reviewed, and that the full release would take a few more weeks.

Lawmakers have accused the Trump administration of violating the law mandating that the files be released by Dec. 19.

“It’s outrageous that the DOJ has illegally withheld over one million documents from the public,” Representative Robert Garcia of California, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, said in a statement.

Senator Chuck Schumer, Democrat of New York and the minority leader, sharply slammed the Trump administration, accusing it of concealing vital information. “Justice delayed is justice denied,” he said in a social media post, demanding transparency. “Release the files. Follow the law.”

In a separate post on X on Wednesday, Schumer escalated his attack, writing: “The Trump administration is full of shit. According to Dems review they’ve released less than 40,000 pages many completely redacted since the deadline on December 19. When they say they’ve released hundreds of thousands it defies credulity.”

To date, the DoJ has released approximately 130,000 pages of documents under pressure from Congress.

The information in the documents released is heavily redacted to comply with a law passed by Congress requiring the disclosure of most of the material in the Epstein file.

The Trump administration is authorized by law to withhold records that identify victims or information that would “jeopardize an active federal investigation.”

The newly released Epstein files — detailing allegations of sexual abuse tied to US President Donald Trump — have emerged as the flashpoint capable of dividing him from his loyal base.
