Iran has imported more than $400 million worth of wheat this year amid lower domestic output that has forced the government to ramp up purchases from regional suppliers.

Figures released by the Iranian customs office (IRICA) on Tuesday showed that Iran had imported 1.125 million metric tons (mt) of wheat valued at $424 million in the first seven months of the calendar year starting in late March 2025.

Imports were sourced from Russia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Turkey, the data showed.

IRICA said Russia accounted for nearly half of Iran’s wheat imports in April–October, shipping more than 0.655 million mt worth nearly $246 million.

The UAE, the main re-export hub in the Persian Gulf, supplied over 0.282 million mt of wheat valued at more than $106 million during the seven months to late October, according to the customs figures.

The data also showed that Iran had spent nearly $72 million on 0.188 million mt of wheat imported from Turkey over the same period.

Iran has been forced to step up wheat imports this year due to a sharp decline in domestic output, which fell by 5 million mt, or 31%, year-on-year to nearly 11 million mt during the April–August harvest season.

Government purchases of locally produced wheat similarly decreased by 4.4 million mt, or 36%, to 7.6 million mt over the same period.

The value of wheat purchased from Iranian farmers this year reached around 1,600 trillion rials ($1.45 billion on currency prices reported during and after harvest), according to figures from the agriculture ministry and its subsidiary, the Government Trading Corporation (GTC).

Iran spent more than $3 billion last year to buy nearly 12 million mt of wheat from domestic farmers.
