A new location-disclosure feature launched by social media platform X has revealed that numerous top MAGA (Make America Great Again) influencers are actually based outside the United States.

The “About This Account” feature, which rolled out to X users on Friday, allows people to see an account’s location, join date, username history, and app download method.

As soon as the tool became available, rival factions and curious users began scrutinizing the true origins of prominent MAGA accounts. Dozens of high-profile right-wing influencers were quickly revealed to operate from overseas.

Accounts presenting themselves as staunch “America First” or MAGA advocates were found to originate from countries like Poland, India, and Nigeria.

For example, the account “MAGANationX,” which boasts nearly 400,000 followers and describes itself as the “Patriot Voice for We the People,” is actually based in Eastern Europe.

Another striking case is an Ivanka Trump fan account, “IvankaNews,” with 1 million followers. The account frequently spreads anti-Islam rhetoric and fears about illegal immigration, yet it is operated from Nigeria.

X’s head of product development, Nikita Bier, claimed, without providing any evidence, that the new feature had “a few rough edges” that the company intends to fix.

One issue is that account locations can be masked using virtual private networks (VPNs), a loophole X plans to address, he said.

Hours after the tool went live, users reported it had been taken down, prompting speculation that the exposure of far-right accounts’ foreign origins played a role in its sudden removal.

The use of fake or foreign-run accounts to amplify the MAGA movement has long been a concern. The Center for Information Resilience (CIR), an independent nonprofit research organization, flagged similar activity during the 2024 election.
