The record-breaking government shutdown came to an end late Wednesday after US President Donald Trump signed a funding bill into law, restoring operations after 43 days of closure.

Speaking from the Oval Office during the signing ceremony, Trump blamed the shutdown on congressional Democrats,

“Today we’re sending a clear message that we will never give in to extortion,” Trump declared.

"This was an easy extension but they didn't want to do it the easy way," Trump said, adding, "They wanted to do it the hard way."

Despite partisan tensions, six Democrats broke ranks to support the funding measure, helping push it through after 43 days of gridlock.

The lawmakers included Reps. Henry Cuellar (Texas), Don Davis (North Carolina), Adam Gray (California), Jared Golden (Maine), Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (Washington), and Tom Suozzi (New York), who joined Republican colleagues in backing the bill.

Notably, Republican Reps. Thomas Massie (Kentucky) and Greg Steube (Florida) voted against the measure.

Both Republicans and Democrats had remained entrenched in their positions, unwilling to compromise on key issues that had led to the impasse in Congress and triggered the government shutdown.

The shutdown, which lasted 43 days, was the longest in US history. Its impact was felt nationwide, with millions of Americans affected.

Hundreds of thousands of federal employees were furloughed or forced to work without pay, straining household budgets and pushing many to seek help from food banks or borrow from friends and family.

Essential services were disrupted, national parks went unstaffed, and small businesses that rely on government contracts or tourism suffered significant losses.
