Hezbollah deterrance

Sheikh Naim Qassem says Hezbollah will not give up its weapons that are used to protect Lebanon’s sovereignty and dignity. Speaking on Martyrs’ Day, Qassem stressed that Israel wants to control Lebanon politically and economically as part of its expansionist "Greater Israel" project. The Hezbollah chief said the movement’s steadfastness stopped 75,000 Israeli troops from advancing and forced their withdrawal in 2000. He reaffirmed that the ceasefire agreement applies only to the southern part of the Litani River, demanding Israel’s full withdrawal and the release of captives. Qassem warned that if the south continues to bleed, all of Lebanon will be affected, blaming the US and Israel for the aggression. He also rejected foreign interference, stressing Lebanon’s strength and sovereignty will be decided by its own people only.

Iraq elections

Voting has concluded in Iraq’s parliamentary elections, and the electronic counting of ballots is now underway. According to the electoral commission, voter turnout reached nearly 24 percent by midday, with particularly strong participation reported in the Baghdad belts. This could mark one of the highest turnouts in recent elections. More than 20 million eligible Iraqis were called to the polls to pick a new 329-member parliament. The UN envoy in Iraq reported a smooth voting process. Among those casting their ballots were former prime minister Nouri al-Maliki and Popular Mobilization Forces leader Qais al-Khazali. Al-Khazali described the vote as “a new day” for democracy while the Iraqi Prime Minister said the election empowers citizens to shape their country’s future.

Taliban claims Islamabad deadly blast

The Pakistan Taliban has claimed responsibility for a suicide attack that has caused a powerful explosion outside a court building in Islamabad, killing at least 12 people and injuring 27. In a statement, the group said their targets were judicial authorities, including judges and lawyers, threatening to carry out more such attacks. A car bomb detonated at the entrance of a judicial complex in Pakistan’s capital earlier in the day. Investigators are continuing to examine the scene to determine further details.
