Former New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has called on world leader to put an end to the ongoing genocide of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip by recognizing Palestinian statehood.
In an opinion piece published by The Guardian on Friday, the former prime minister decried the massive death toll in Gaza, in particular the impact of the genocidal war on new mothers and childbirth.
“There is a path to stopping the genocide still happening daily before us: more countries must recognize Palestinian statehood; any cooperation that facilitates military action must end,” she wrote.
“Humanitarian aid needs to urgently reach the trapped and starving; and medical care must be available for the injured, the malnourished, and for the expectant and new mothers,” she wrote.
She stressed that as the leaders of the world gather in New York for next week’s 80th UN General Assembly, “we must continue to call on those with power to respond to these humanitarian crises, ranging from the conflict in Ukraine to natural disasters caused by the climate crisis.”
A recent UN report confirmed that the Israeli regime is committing genocide in Gaza.
Since the Israeli regime forces launched genocidal war on Gaza in October 2023, at least 65,141 people have been killed, most of them women and children.
The former prime minister called on the world leaders scheduled to meet at the UN gathering next week to resist the dehumanization of numbers and level responses to world crises, starting with the Gaza genocide.
“We may live in a world plagued by humanitarian crises, but we must resist the dehumanization of numbers,” Ardern said.
“We should start with Gaza,” she added.
“Women give birth during war, and they die. But they shouldn’t. Not in the midst of birth, nor in the crossfire of conflict. Sometimes politics and leadership should be as simple as that.”
