The Israeli military is preparing to send an “unprecedented” number of remote-controlled armored personnel carriers (APCs) loaded with explosives into Gaza City, a report says.

The offensive, dubbed “Gideon’s Chariots 2,” is part of a three-stage plan designed by Major General Yaniv Asor to occupy the city, where hundreds of thousands of Palestinians remain trapped or refuse to leave, according to Hebrew news outlet Walla on Wednesday.

Walla cited military sources as saying that the first phase, described as the “fire phase,” focuses on large-scale destruction of the city’s infrastructure, primarily at night, using both above- and below-ground robotic devices. One source noted, “Gaza has never been hit like this before. This is only the second night.”

The vehicles, referred to by Gaza residents as “booby-trapped robots,” are decommissioned APCs fitted with explosives and remotely driven into densely populated urban areas before detonation. The blasts have caused extensive destruction.

Abdulwahhab Ismail, a resident of northwestern Gaza’s Saftawi area, told Mondoweiss news outlet that the Israeli military deliberately leaves the vehicles near homes to instill fear before triggering them.

He explained that the army waits to see if residents flee, then detonates the vehicles, regardless of civilian presence.

Ismail added that the current attacks are far more destructive than those in the past. Previously, only one or two buildings were targeted per robot; now, dozens are destroyed simultaneously, with robots working in coordination with warplanes.

The Israeli military has stationed a significant number of APCs near the Gaza separation line. The Jerusalem Post reported that under orders from Major General Asor, the number of deployed vehicles has increased sharply, with field officers reporting that usage has tripled.

Hebrew media reports in August indicated that Israeli arms companies plan to expand production of tanks and APCs, with budgets exceeding $1.3 billion.

Between August 13 and September 3, Gaza authorities reported that at least 100 booby-trapped robots were used in heavily populated areas.

Walla reported that the second stage of the southern command’s plan involves the occupation of Gaza City. In contrast, the third stage remains classified and reportedly includes military tactics not previously used in Israeli offensives.

Since the Israeli regime launched its genocidal campaign in Gaza on October 7, 2023, it has killed 65,062 people and wounded 165,697, most of them women and children.
