Arba'een pilgrimage

Millions of Muslims from across the globe have converged on Iraq's holy City of Karbala to commemorate Arba’een. The occasion marks 40 days since the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein, the third Shia Imam. The solemn occasion is observed in Iran on Thursday and in Iraq the following day. For at least two weeks, pilgrims from different countries walked 80 kilometers from Najafi to Karbala to attend the event. Among them are over three million Iranian nationals. The Arba’een march is one of the largest annual religious congregations in the world. Imam Hossein and a small group of his companions were martyred nearly fourteen centuries ago in the battle of Karbala after they rose up against Yazid, the tyrant caliph of the time.
