Iranian students claim 4 medals at International AI Olympiad

Iran’s high school AI prodigies claimed a remarkable haul of two silver and two bronze medals at the 2nd International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence (IOAI) in Beijing, showcasing the nation’s growing strength on the global tech stage.

Iran’s delegation stood tall at the IOAI — an esteemed global competition for high school students — which was held from August 2 to 9, 2025, at the Beijing National Day School under the patronage of UNESCO.

The event brought together 310 students from 63 countries, forming 80 teams in the world’s largest high school-level AI contest.

In fierce competition, Iran secured its standing with two silver medals earned by Ali Shayan and Arash Yousef-Nejad, while Radin Rahmani Nodehi and Parsa Golestani added two bronze medals to the tally.

This performance placed Iran in 16th position overall — ahead of strong competitors such as the United Kingdom, Australia, the Netherlands, and South Korea.

IOAI is structured to challenge students across scientific and practical AI domains, including on-site problem-solving and hands-on tasks involving fields like computer vision and natural language processing.

This strong showing underscores Iran’s growing prominence in artificial intelligence.

National observers celebrated the results as evidence of the depth, dedication, and rising potential of the country's AI talent, reflecting continued commitment to scientific progress.

While celebrating the achievement, Iranians reflect on the human losses suffered by the country’s scientific circle as a result of numerous instances of foreign aggression.

Those include the Israeli regime’s imposed war in June that claimed the lives of Dr. Majid TajenJari, a globally recognized expert in artificial intelligence, and Dr. Mohammad Reza Zakarian, a gifted AI pioneer.

The duo was among hundreds of other Iranians, including senior military officials, nuclear scientists, and ordinary civilians, who perished throughout the Israeli attacks.

The nation and its authorities have, however, invariably asserted their resolve to remain steadfast on the path of scientific progress.

Back in February, Iran’s minister of information and communications technology described the country as a major player in the field of artificial intelligence in the Persian Gulf region, stressing that Tehran was ready to start cooperation with regional states across the arena.
