Georges Abdallah arrives in Beirut
Georges Abdallah, a Lebanese pro-Palestine activist and the longest-held prisoner in Europe, has arrived in his home country after over 40 years behind bars in France. Hundreds of people gathered outside the Beirut airport to welcome Abdallah. He was freed on Friday after a French appeal court ordered his release. Abdallah had been imprisoned in southern France over allegations of assassinating an Israeli diplomat and a US military attaché in Paris in 1982. Although he became eligible for parole in 1999, repeated efforts to secure his release were blocked due to political pressure from the US and Israel. His release is being hailed across Lebanon and the wider Muslim world as a symbol of resistance, steadfastness, and the struggle against occupation.
