At least four people, including a baby, have been killed and scores others injured in the US state of Oklahoma as dozens of tornadoes hit the country’s Southern Plains.

Massive destruction was seen in the state after the severe weather started late on Saturday night, with dozens of structures, including the hospital in the town of Marietta, being destroyed or damaged.

The Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management said area hospitals recorded 100 injuries.

More than 20,000 people were also without power as of Sunday evening, according to officials.

Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt on Sunday issued an emergency disaster declaration for the state, freeing up more money for first responders and recovery operations.

“Definitely the most damage since I’ve been governor,” in 2019, Stitt said in the hard-hit town of Sulphur, where, he said, the fourth death happened.

The White House said in a statement on Sunday that President Joe Biden offered the full support of the federal government to help with the recovery efforts, during a phone call with the Oklahoma governor.

“There’s been a significant amount of damage throughout this town and even throughout the entire path of the destruction. There were multiple tornadoes that touched down yesterday, I believe 14, I forgot the exact number,” AFP quoted Clay Jackson, a local, as saying on Monday.

Another Oklahoma resident Ryan Connor called the natural disaster “really bad” and “pretty scary.”

Weather alerts on Sunday put over seven million Americans in the US Southern Plains under tornado warnings.

Biden also declared a major disaster over the severe winter storms that flooded the State of Washington and Kansas, according to the White House.

Storm warnings for high winds, heavy rain and hail also were issued by the National Weather Service on Sunday for more than 47 million people stretching from East Texas north through Illinois and Wisconsin.
