‘Categorically unacceptable’: Moscow blasts Israel over deadly strikes on Syria

Russia's foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova

Moscow has strongly denounced the Israeli regime over a raft of earlier airstrikes by Tel Aviv against northern Syria that left dozens of Syrian civilians and military personnel dead and injured.

The regime conducted the attacks against targets near the Syrian city of Aleppo on Friday, using multiple warplanes.

"Such aggressive actions against the Syrian Arab Republic, which constitute a flagrant violation of the country's sovereignty and the basic norms of international law, are categorically unacceptable," Russia's foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a statement later in the day.

Syria and the Israeli regime are technically at war due to the latter’s 1967-present occupation of the country’s Golan Heights.

The regime began carrying out hundreds of attacks against the country after 2011, when the Arab nation found itself in the grip of rampant foreign-backed militancy and terrorism.

Tel Aviv has significantly ramped up the strikes since last October, when it began a genocidal war against the Gaza Strip, in what has been described by observers as a reckless bid threatening to fan tensions throughout the region.

"We strongly condemn these provocative acts of force, which carry extremely dangerous consequences in terms of a sharp deterioration of the situation in the zone of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict," Zakharova likewise said.

Earlier on Friday, Iran similarly denounced the Israeli airstrikes, saying the attacks were a failed attempt to heal the regime’s humiliated image in the besieged Gaza Strip.

Condemning the attacks, Zakharova’s Iranian counterpart Nasser Kan’ani also addressed a report by the official Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), which had said the Israeli aggression had coincided with airstrikes by foreign-backed Takfiri terrorist groups from the neighboring province of Idlib on the same area.

Such attacks, which were coordinated and synchronized with the attacks of terrorist groups in Syria, are a “clear testimony to the support of the terrorist regime of Israel for terrorist groups and ideologies in Syria,” he said.
