Iraq’s Nujaba vows to keep up attacks on US forces in protest at occupation, Gaza war
Iraqi resistance group Harakat Hezbollah Nujaba has vowed to keep up strikes against US military bases in the country and neighboring Syria.
Sheikh Akram al-Kaabi in a statement on Friday dismissed US threats to carry out airstrikes on Iraq, stressing that “Any strike will result in an appropriate response.”
He added that his group would continue its actions against American forces until its demands for the occupation troops to leave Iraq and an end to the relentless Israeli ground and aerial offensives against Palestinians in Gaza are met.
The remarks come as Washington has threatened to strike targets in Iraq after three of its troops were killed in a drone strike at an occupied base last week near the Syria-Jordan border.
The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella group of anti-terror fighters, that claimed responsibility for that attack announced on Tuesday a "suspension" in its operations against American targets across the region.
The group cited "consideration for the Iraqi government" as the reason for the decision, without elaborating.
Anti-US sentiments are running high in Iraq over the strong support of Washington for Israeli crimes in Gaza as well as Washington's refraining from withdrawing its forces from Iraq, 19 years after invading the country.
Iraq adopted the law to expel foreign forces after Washington assassinated top Iraqi and Iranian anti-terror commanders four years ago.
General Qassem Soleimani, commander of the Quds Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the second-in-command of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), were assassinated along with their comrades in a US drone strike that was authorized by then-president Donald Trump near Baghdad International Airport on January 3, 2020.
The two iconic anti-terror commanders are greatly admired for their instrumental role in fighting and decimating the Daesh Takfiri terrorist group in the region, particularly in Iraq and Syria.
The United States, Israel’s biggest ally, has provided the occupying regime with a raft of arms and ammunition since the initiation of the Gaza war.
Washington has also vetoed UN Security Council resolutions that called on the regime to cease its aggression.
