US Syria oil theft
New footage has been released, showing a US military convoy allegedly transporting Syrian oil to Iraq. The video, dating back to September 26, was released by the Cradle online news magazine. It says dozens of tankers pass weekly in convoys transporting smuggled Syrian oil accompanied by US warplanes and helicopters. According to the Cradle, the Syrian oil is transported to the Harir military site in Erbil. There, the oil is emptied into other tankers that carry it to the US base at Ain al-Assad in Anbar province. The US military has stationed its forces and equipment in northeastern Syria, with the Pentagon claiming that the deployment is aimed at preventing the oil fields in the area from falling into the hands of Daesh terrorists. Damascus, however, maintains that the deployment of US troops to the country is only meant to plunder Syria’s natural resources.
US government shutdown
The US government has avoided a federal shutdown after Congress agreed to a last-minute temporary funding deal. The 45-day resolution would keep the government funded until mid-November. The deal still leaves out aid to Ukraine, requested by President Joe Biden. A White House official says the president is set to sign the measure into law but expects Republicans to allow a quick separate vote on Ukraine aid. In recent weeks, numerous efforts to pass spending bills in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives were thwarted by a faction of lawmakers who demanded significant cuts, including no more funding for Ukraine. House speaker, Kevin McCarthy, passed the measure with the help of Democratic votes and even saw a rebellion from fellow Republicans during votes to reach a deal.
“Empire of Lies”
China has slammed the United States as a true empire of lies following a State Department report that accused Beijing of information manipulation. Chinese Foreign Ministry said the report has disregarded facts. It added the agencies of the US State Department that produced the report were the source of false information and the command post of cognitive warfare. On Thursday, the State Department accused Beijing of manipulating global media through censorship, data harvesting, and covert purchases of foreign news outlets. It claimed that China has hit major setbacks when targeting democratic countries due to local media and civil society pushback. The report came as Beijing seeks to combat Western media, which are trying to offer negative images of China.
