Shoot the messenger: Northern Ireland police corruption

It was the ultimate case of "shoot the messenger." News commentator, Barry McCaffrey, and his journalist partner have exposed one of the biggest scandals in Northern Ireland's policing history.

Whilst watching the World Cup qualifying match, six Catholic men were brutally murdered. During the following investigation, it seemed the police had woefully and deliberately mismanaged evidence and lost major pieces of evidence, including the car the killer allegedly drove to the scene.

For years, the families had kept a dignified silence, believing the authorities when they said there will be "no stone left unturned" in uncovering who was at the heart of this horrific murders.

It later turned out that the police may well have been sitting on the name of the killer and his co-conspirators for many years. However, it was only when Barry McCaffrey started writing about the story, and ultimately contributed to an award-winning documentary on the topic, that the Northern Ireland's police became really interested. But, instead of arresting the man they had as a person of interest, it was Barry and his colleague who were thrown in jail.
