Iran-Iraq relations
Iran's president says the Islamic Republic does not tolerate the presence of terrorist groups along its common border with Iraq, or inside that country. Ebrahim Raeisi was speaking in a meeting with visiting Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein. He stressed the necessity of full implementation of bilateral agreements on ending the presence of terrorist groups in Iraq. Raeisi added that Iran did its utmost to defend Iraq when the country was under attack by the Daesh terrorist group. The top Iraqi diplomat, in turn, said his country is fully committed to agreements with Iran. Hussein added that the Iraqi government will never allow any group to use its soil to threaten or attack borders of its neighbors, especially Iran.
IAEA 'political statement'
Tehran has rejected a Western-sponsored anti-Iran statement issued during the IAEA’s Board of Governors meeting, which accused the country of non-compliance with its safeguards commitments. The foreign ministry spokesman said Iran and the IAEA have made considerable progress in boosting cooperation based on a joint statement issued in March. Nasser Kan’ani said the two sides have settled several issues, and talks are ongoing on other issues. He said the so-called outstanding safeguards-related issues are politically motivated and must be resolved as they are an obstacle to Iran's cooperation with the IAEA. Kan'ani also expressed regret that the UK, Germany, France and the U-S have made Iran-IAEA cooperation a subject of their politically-motivated moves. The spokesman said Iran will soon show a suitable reaction to their latest move. He stressed that mounting political pressure on Iran at the IAEA’s Board will certainly backfire.
Poverty in US
A grim picture of poverty in the United States. According to a new report, the number of Americans living in poverty has jumped for the first time in more than a decade. The data was published by the Census Bureau, a principal agency of the US Federal Statistical System. It says the poverty rate went up to more than 12-percent in 2022. The figure is based on the Supplemental Poverty Measure which takes into account certain non-cash government assistance and needed expenses. The poverty rate among children has also become two-fold. Over 12-percent of American kids lived in poverty last year.
