Russia-Ukraine war

Russia says it has intercepted two Ukrainian drones over the areas near Moscow. This is the latest in a series of such attacks targeting the Russian capital. The Russian Defense Ministry said one of the drones was downed near a major airport, south of the city. It added another UAV was shot down in the Minsk highway area, west of the capital. Ukraine has recently carried out several drone strikes on targets inside Russia. Moscow calls those attacks acts of desperation, but Kiev claims that such assaults are aimed at bringing the war to Russian territory. Russia, in the meantime, has carried out drone attacks on Ukrainian territory as well.

UK-Turkey migration deal

The UK says it has reached a deal with Turkey to enhance cooperation between the two sides on what it calls tackling illegal migration. London says the agreement includes establishing a new center by the Turkish National Police. In a statement, the interior ministry said the two countries will jointly disrupt networks active in unauthorized journeys. The revelation comes as Britain is facing criticism, including from the UN, over its crackdown on migrants and asylum-seekers. Last year, the UK government proposed a controversial bill under which asylum seekers reaching by boat would face almost immediate deportation to Rwanda. The UN Refugee Agency and the UN Human Rights Office slammed the plan, calling it illegal and inhuman. They warned of a profound impact on human rights and the international refugee protection system.

China economy

The Chinese economy has slipped into deflation as data show consumer prices fell last month, for the first time in two years. China’s National Bureau of Statistics says the consumer price index, the main gauge of inflation, dropped by 0.3% in July. The figure had flatlined in the previous month. Retailers and factories are hit by a slowdown in sales amid weakening demand. Many are under pressure to cut prices. The figures come a day after data was released showing the country’s exports witnessed its steepest drop in three years by 14.5%. Authorities have, however, downplayed concerns about deflation. Beijing has announced a raft of measures to prop up the economy, including greater support for private enterprises.
