Italians struggling with mortgage payments as banks reap billions

In Italy the payments on variable-rate mortgages have increased remarkably as a result of the European Central Bank's policy of repeatedly hiking interest rates to combat inflation.

Rome has announced a one-off 40% windfall tax on local banks' extra profit as Italian families are struggling to make their mortgage repayments.
