Residents of Slovenian town describe recent floods as 'catastrophe'
Residents of Slovenian town of Crna na Koroskem have been cleaning up streets and removing mud-covered pieces of furniture after heavy rains lashed about two thirds of the Alpine nation for days.
Slovenia's worst floods on record have killed at least six people, swept away homes and clogged villages with debris, authorities and media said on Monday.
Thousands of people have been evacuated from homes around northwest and central Slovenia, with the army, firefighters and rescuers trying to free others and clear streets.
"The river Meza flooded. The center of our town is flooded. I believe it is a catastrophe," a local resident told Reuters.
"On Friday morning we had a storm. I can't even describe how bad it was. I'm among the elder ones here and I have not seen this in my lifetime. It happened so fast. In 30 minutes everything was flooded. I took my 93-year-old grandmother one floor higher. I came down to close the windows and in a flash I was in the water up to my neck. All I could do was save myself. And then it was all over. We could not do anything," said another resident.
The Slovenian Environment Agency said floods were starting to recede on Monday, but some areas were still cut off.
The European Union has offered heavy machinery and engineering units.
Slovenia has also requested helicopters, soldiers and prefabricated bridges from NATO military alliance, .
