Combating Islamophobia

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation has held an extraordinary session to address the desecration of the Holy Qur’an in Sweden and Denmark. In a resolution released following the virtual meeting, the OIC strongly condemned the recent despicable acts of sacrilege against Muslims' holy book. It also called on the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to appoint a special envoy on combating Islamophobia. The OIC urged member states to take appropriate action, whether political or economic, in countries allowing the sacrilege. Addressing the meeting, Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian said Islamic governments should reaffirm that burning the Qur'an is a clear example of racism and should be criminalized.

Russia-Ukraine war

The Kremlin has categorically dismissed the possibility of a peace settlement in Ukraine at the current juncture, saying necessary conditions are not in place. The Kremlin spokesman says there can be no peace in Ukraine as long as it is used as a tool in the collective West's war against Russia. Dmitry Peskov, however, said any attempt to broker peace deserves a positive assessment. He was referring to the upcoming meeting on Ukraine in Saudi Arabia. Peskov said Russia will monitor the meeting but the objectives and agenda of the talks are not yet fully clear for Moscow. Russia has not been invited to the August meeting in Jeddah, which is set to bring together senior officials from 30 countries.

Niger coup

Burkina Faso and Mali have issued a stern warning against any military intervention to reverse a coup in neighboring Niger. In a joint statement, the two West African countries said any such foreign offensive would be considered a declaration of war against them. The warning came after West African leaders threatened to use force to reinstate Niger's ousted president, Mohamed Bazoum. Mali and Burkina Faso have both been hit by military coups since 2020, prompting the withdrawal of French forces from those countries. Niger is now France’s last outpost in the Sahel region and the new junta there has warned of a plot by Paris to intervene militarily to reinstate the ousted president.
