Lawyers for former US president Donald Trump have requested a Florida federal court to delay his trial in a case involving classified documents, claiming that Trump is too busy with his presidential campaign for the 2024 election

Trump, who seeks a second term in office, is too busy campaigning for the 2024 presidential election to prepare for trial, according to a Monday court filing jointly submitted by lawyers for Trump and those for his aide, Walt Nauta.

Running for the presidency needs a "tremendous amount of time and energy," they said, adding that his campaigns will continue the election on November 5, 2024.

"Such preparation requires significant planning and time, making the current schedule untenable and counseling in favor of a continuance," they claimed.

The August 14 date set for the trial is "unreasonable ... [and] would result in a miscarriage of justice," Trump’s lawyers argued, asking for a postponement of the trial.

Earlier, US District Judge Aileen Cannon had suggested August 14 as the trial date, but federal prosecutors requested more time to prepare and asked for a December 11 date instead.

The lawyers cited the “extraordinary” nature of the case, in which Trump, the first president ever in US history to face criminal charges, has been accused of saving sensitive government documents he had taken from the White House at his Florida residence.

He is accused of illegally holding on to documents with sensitive information at his Mar-a-Lago estate, and obstructing federal agents’ efforts to retrieve the files.

The legal team also cited challenges in finding an impartial jury due to the election as another reason for the postponement of the trial.

Trump, last month, pleaded not guilty to 37 counts during an arraignment in Miami, Florida.
