Lebanon politics

The Lebanese Parliament has held a session to elect a new president following eight months of political stalemate. Lawmakers have failed again to elect a successor to Michel Aoun who stepped down last October. This is the 12th time that they failed to choose a new president. The two main contenders were Sleiman Frangieh, the leader of the Marada Party, and Jihad Azour, the regional director of the International Monetary Fund. The Hezbollah resistance movement has, time and again, blamed the US and Saudi Arabia for stonewalling the election process, calling for unity among political parties.

Iran president in Nicaragua

The Nicaraguan and Iranian presidents have hailed relations between the two countries and pledged to boost them further. The remarks came while Daniel Ortega was welcoming his Iranian counterpart Ebrahim Raeisi in a ceremony upon his arrival in the capital Managua. Raeisi said the US was seeking to paralyze Iranians with threats and sanctions, but those measures rather turned into opportunities. The Iranian president is in Nicaragua as part of a three-nation Latin American tour. On Monday, he visited Venezuela, where the two sides signed 25 documents aimed at enhancing cooperation in various fields. The Iranian president will next travel to Cuba to meet top officials there.

UK junior doctors on strike

Junior doctors in England have begun a new 72-hour strike over pay, prompting warning from officials of massive disruption in the health sector. Some 48,000 medics are participating in the latest industrial action that will last until Saturday. A union, representing Junior Doctors, says the strikers are against the government’s 5% pay offer. It says the medics have seen a 26% pay cut in real terms in the last 15 years and their salaries have failed to keep pace with inflation. Junior doctors have threatened with more such strikes throughout the summer if their demands, including 35% pay rise, are not met. In April, a similar walkout created chaos in hospitals across England. A wide range of public sectors in the UK has witnessed strikes in recent months over pay amid skyrocketing inflation and a coat-of-living crisis.
