Tehran has condemned the interventionist position of certain European states on the execution of the ringleader of a separatist group responsible for a series of terrorist operations in Iran, saying such an approach will promote terrorism all over the world.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kan'ani issued the condemnation in a statement on Sunday, a day after some European countries, including Sweden, denounced the execution of Habib Farajollah Chaab, also known as Habib Asyud, the Swedish-backed mastermind of the 2018 Ahvaz terrorist attack that killed 25 Iranians.

“It is regrettable that some European countries, instead of confronting the terrorists who target the lives of innocent people are openly proud of their crimes, support them in an unjustifiable manner which is contrary to the basic principles of human rights,” he said.

Kan'ani further noted that Chaab, the ringleader of the Harkat al-Nazal terror outfit, had a long list of carrying out incidents of violence, terrorism, and killings of innocent men, women and children.

He also clarified that such support by the West for terrorists will not only prevent the execution of justice but will actually "encourage" and "promote" the sinister phenomenon of terrorism all over the world.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman stressed that the Islamic Republic is determined to confront terrorism and uphold justice, adding that it will not compromise on the rights of Iranians and their security.

The official further said, “If the Europeans do not have a serious will to distance themselves from terrorism and its various forms, at least they should not intensify the suffering of the victims' families with their support for terrorists.”

Chaab pleaded guilty and confessed last year to masterminding the 2018 atrocity as well as many other acts of terror targeting the Iranian nation.

He had admitted to being naturalized by Sweden and backed by the Scandinavian country’s government, saying he had been provided with a device that would alert Swedish security officials to rescue him whenever he was in danger.

The Swedish-backed terrorist was arrested in November 2020 on the back of a set of “specialized and combined measures” by Iranian intelligence forces.

The Harkat al-Nazal terror outfit has been pushing to separate the southwestern province of Khuzestan — home to the country’s most Arab population — from the rest of Iran by engaging in an armed conflict against the Iranian government.

In September 2018, it claimed responsibility for an attack on a military parade in Ahvaz, Khuzestan’s provincial capital, which killed 25 people, including members of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) and civilian bystanders, and injured more than 270 others.
