Palestinian protesters demand Israel return withheld bodies

Palestinian protesters gather in the occupied West Bank on May 6, 2023 to demand Israel return the bodies of those killed by Israeli forces.

The bereaved families of Palestinians killed by Israeli forces have staged a protest in the occupied West Bank to demand the occupying regime return the seized bodies.

On Saturday, the protesters gathered outside the home of Khader Adnan in the town of Arraba in the northern West Bank province of Jenin. He was a senior leader of the Islamic Jihad resistance movement who died last week at an Israeli jail following an 87-day hunger strike.

The family of Adnan as well as former prisoners took part in the protest.

The demonstrators demanded the Israeli regime return dozens of seized bodies, including that of Adnan.

Adnan was detained on February 5 and immediately went on hunger strike in protest against his detention without trial and charge.

Adnan had been arrested a dozen times by Israeli forces for his political and anti-occupation activities over the past two decades. He spent a total of eight years behind bars.

Palestinian resistance groups and authorities have mourned the murder of Adnan, holding the occupying Tel Aviv regime fully responsible for the crime.

The protesters also urged the international organizations to exert pressure on the Israeli regime to return the bodies.

According to rights groups, Israel holds the bodies of at least 132 Palestinians, including 12 children, killed by Israeli forces since 2015.

Israeli forces regularly seize Palestinians’ bodies. Sometimes the bodies are later returned to their families for burial. At other times, they are withheld to prevent funerals in Palestinian towns, or with a view to using them in negotiations to retrieve the bodies of Israeli soldiers held by resistance groups.
