Ukrainian, Donbass children being taught different versions of history

This is Natasha, a Kindergarten teacher in Donbass. She is teaching children at her home as the schools are closed. They are too often hit by Ukrainian shelling. Natasha’s brother was killed last year fighting as a soldier. One of the boys has also been wounded at the front. I asked her how she explains the war to the kids.
What Natasha is teaching these kids reflects the views of the vast majority of people in Donetsk. Who are pro Russian and blame Ukraine and the West for the war. She shows me a video of her niece celebrating Russia’s national day…
There are some videos going around social media of Ukrainian children being taught to hate Russians. While it’s not clear how widespread that is, what is clear is that Ukrainian children are being taught Ukrainian patriotic songs and nationalist history.
And that the war is Russia’s fault. Meanwhile the kids here are being taught a very different version of events.
While the frontlines continue to fluctuate, on what was once governed as one country, a whole generation is now being brought up with conflicting world views and as two separate nations.
