South Koreans question arms sales to UAE

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol visited the United Arab Emirates this week to boost trade ties. South Korea is constructing four nuclear reactors for the UAE, as President Yoon supports a return to nuclear energy.

President Yoon also seeks to boost weapons exports to the UAE on the heels of a $3.5 million deal for a South Korean anti-ballistic missile system—this, despite a controversial surveillance lapse in South Korea.

President Yoon and the South Korean military have been under intense criticism following the recent incursion of North Korean drones across the border. On Sunday, President Yoon and his wife visited a detachment of South Korean troops stationed in the UAE since 2011.

South Korea has become a major exporter of fighter jets, tanks and guided missiles, which have found prominence in the Yemen war. South Koreans, however, view such weapon sales with caution.

South Korea is now the world's 7th largest arms dealer with prominent exports to Southeast Asia, Poland and Saudi Arabia.
