General Soleimani assassination

People have gathered in the southeastern Iranian city of Kerman to pay tribute to the assassinated anti-terror commander, Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani. The gathering is being held on the eve of the third anniversary of the assassination of General Soleimani. Rallies and commemorative ceremonies for the anti-terror icon are scheduled nationwide on Tuesday. General Soleimani and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, deputy head of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization forces, were killed in a US drone strike near Baghdad International Airport in 2020. A UN special rapporteur on extra-judicial killings condemned the strike as a violation of international law. Iran called Soleimani’s assassination state terrorism and vowed to take revenge on the masterminds and perpetrators of the drone strike in due course.

UK cost of living crisis

A new poll has highlighted the dire economic conditions in the UK amid a deepening cost of living crisis there. The survey by the Citizens Advice revealed that nearly 40 percent of UK adults find it difficult or impossible to cover even a 20 pound increase to their monthly outgoings. The charity said people were increasingly resorting to desperate measures to get by such as eating only cold meals. The study also showed that a third of the people have had to use their savings during the past three months. Almost three people in 10 also say they are losing sleep because they are worried about their finances. The UK is witnessing a tightening squeeze on incomes as it has been hit by soaring energy costs and inflation.

'US foreign policy blackmail'

The Venezuelan president has slammed the US for its "foreign policy blackmail" toward his country. Nicolas Maduro says US support for institutions that don’t exist makes no sense. Recently, Venezuela’s opposition-led National Assembly voted to disband their so-called interim government, which was backed by the US and led by the opposition figure, Juan Guaido. The US National Security Council then announced the country will continue to back Venezuela's interim government regardless of what form it takes. Caracas cut off relations with Washington in 2019 after it backed Guaido who had declared himself president of Venezuela. The US then launched a series of oil embargoes and targeted sanctions to force Maduro out of office.
