General Soleimani assassination
Iran says it explores all legal paths in bringing to justice the perpetrators behind the assassination of its top military commander, Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani. Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian says Western countries, the US in particular, are seeking to obstruct the legal pursuit of the case. He however, said Tehran has already filed the complaint and will follow it in its usual path. The top diplomat noted that some 60 American officials in connection with the assassination have been blacklisted by the Islamic Republic. He added that Tehran will pursue the case until they are brought to justice.
Israel attack on Syria
Reports coming out of the Syrian capital say Israel has targeted the southern region of the city. According to the Syrian military, two soldiers were killed and five others wounded in the regime’s strike. The normal functioning of Damascus international airport has also been halted. Israel frequently carries out airstrikes on Syria. Damascus has, time and again, warned against the regime’s acts of aggression. The Syrian government has also lodged official complaints with the UN and other international bodies about the Israeli violation.
Brazil’s new president
Brazil’s Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has been sworn in as president for a third term. During his speech at Congress, he took aim at the government of his far-right predecessor, pledging to reconstruct the country. Lula underlined that he is receiving a ruined country grappling with hunger. He said his predecessor, Jair Bolsonaro, depleted resources for education and health, and undermined human rights. Lula also accused Bolsonaro of committing genocide for his failure to contain the Covid-19 pandemic, which led to the death of over 680,000 Brazilians. The leftist leader took the oath of office while Bolsonaro avoided handing over the presidential sash to him. Lula narrowly defeated Bolsonaro in the run-off election held in October after the two candidates failed to cross the 50-percent threshold in the first round.
