Mockery of UN: Genocidal Israeli regime votes to oust Iran from women’s body

By Fiza Raza

Last week, the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), one of the six principal organs of the world body, adopted a resolution originally introduced by the US to remove Iran from the Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW) for the rest of its 2022-26 term.

UNCSW is a premier United Nations body dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and women’s empowerment.

The politically-motivated move came amid months-long deadly foreign-backed riots in Iran triggered by the death of a young woman, Mahsa Amini, in police custody in mid-September.

The violent unrest has left more than 200 dead, including 50 security officials, according to officials, with violent mobs going on the rampage across the country.

Despite all evidence pointing to Amini’s natural death in police custody with nothing to substantiate claims made by mainstream Western media that she was beaten, the US and its allies used this grossly distorted narrative to introduce the anti-Iran resolution at the UN.

A total of 29 member states voted in favor of the resolution, one of them being an illegitimate entity that can easily be described as the joke of the century: The terrorist regime of Israel.

The women’s rights record of the Israeli regime is perhaps the darkest in modern history, matched only by the United States, yet this apartheid regime continues to sit on the UN women’s rights body and has the audacity to vote against the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The preposterous US-backed move to expel Iran from the UN body came only seven months after an Israeli regime soldier killed veteran Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in cold blood while she was covering a military raid in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin.

Murdering female journalists and activists is nothing new for the murderous Zionist state, and it almost always manages to get away with it, of course with the blessings of the United States.

Israeli occupation forces routinely target innocent Palestinian women and girls with complete impunity. Just two days before the UNCSW resolution, a 16-year-old Palestinian girl Jana Majdi Zakarneh was brutally killed when she was standing on the roof of her house.

At least 17 young women have been killed by the Israeli occupation forces in 2022 alone.

Since 1967, the regime has arrested 16,000 Palestinian women. Currently, there are 33 Palestinian women held in Israeli prisons under horrible and inhumane conditions.

Human rights groups have repeatedly warned about the inhumane, torturous treatment meted out to these prisoners, ranging from sexual abuse to isolation and solitary confinement.

The regime’s prisons are known for poor ventilation, unhygienic conditions and contaminated water which make the ordeal more unbearable.

Prisoners are denied proper medical care by Israeli authorities regularly. In July, 68-year-old Saadia Farajallah died in the Israeli Damon prison due to medical negligence six months after her arrest.

Israa Jaabis is another Palestinian woman held in an Israeli regime prison on baseless allegations. She requires eight emergency surgeries and cannot breathe through her nose due to her injuries.

Israeli authorities have denied proper medical treatment to Israa since her arrest in 2015.

There are many other female prisoners, apart from Saadia and Israa, who are currently languishing in Israeli prisons without legal trial and need urgent medical attention.

The height of the regime’s cruelty is that treatment is made available to inmates on the day of long-awaited family visits, which forces the patient to prefer the visit over the treatment.

Israeli regime does not even spare pregnant women from physical and psychological torture. They have been among the worst victims of the Israeli war against Palestinians.

The pregnant women, who need extra care, are attacked and arrested by Israeli regime forces from their homes or checkpoints, regardless of their health condition.

In most cases, they give birth under harsh, immensely traumatic prison conditions with no family member allowed to be on their side.

The list of Israeli atrocities against Palestinian women is never-ending. From the very beginning of the regime’s illegitimate birth, it has abused and killed Palestinian women demolished their houses, and subjected their loved ones to systematic torture and savagery.

Despite that, the United Nations and the international community have miserably failed to stop the regime's aggression against the people of Palestine, especially the vulnerable women.

There have been umpteen UN resolutions condemning the apartheid regime, but it has continued to terrorize the Palestinian people with overt and covert backing from the Western regimes, making a mockery of the world body and its mandate.

To make the matters worse, the United States has always used its veto power to block UN resolutions against Israel, backing the terrorist regime and its horrendous crimes.

In the past 50 years, around 50 UNSC resolutions against Israel were vetoed by the US, which bears testimony to Imam Khomeini’s description of the veto power as worse than ‘the law of jungle.’

This reveals the absurd political nature of these international organizations, which are mere pawns in the hands of arrogant global powers like the US to bully countries that refuse to bend.

Human rights are not important for these powers and organizations such as the UN are used as tools to target countries that have chosen independence rather than the shackles of imperialism.
