Slamming US support for terror

Iran’s Foreign Ministry strongly rejects a recent meeting between former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and the so-called leader of the Mojahedin-e-Khalq terrorist group, known as the MKO. Foreign Ministry Spokesman Abbas Kan’ani says the meeting further proves Washington’s cooperation with the murderers of seventeen thousand Iranians. The Iranian official said by quote whitewashing terrorism and shamefully sanctifying the MKO leader, US officials have laid bare the false face of American human rights. Kan’ani said the US appeal to the MKO terrorists is aimed at exerting pressure on the Islamic Republic. He said the White House will remain legally and internationally responsible for violating the rights of Iranians. In the meeting with the MKO’s leader on Saturday, Pompeo reiterated support for the terrorist group. The former US secretary of state picked the leader of the terrorist group as quote Iran’s president.

US gun violence

A new study shows young Black people in the United States are disproportionately impacted by gun violence. Black children and teens make up only fifteen percent of the population but accounted for almost half of gun deaths in 2020. Official data shows firearm-related deaths have gone up over the past few years. And the rise among the Black youths is much higher. It is virtually fifty percent more than the rise among the young white people. The study has not examined possible reasons for the results or what might be done to reverse the trend. The United States has suffered from an expanding trend of gun violence and episodes of mass shootings. This year alone, more than six hundred mass shootings have been recorded in the country.

Peru general elections

Peru’s congress has voted to move up general elections from 2026 to April 2024 to ease political tensions in the South American country. Earlier on Tuesday, the electoral jury gave congress a provisional green light to bring the elections forward. Lawmakers voted ninety three to thirty with one abstention to make the change to the electoral calendar. The measure stipulates that in July 2024 the country’s interim president, Dina Boluarte, hand over power to the winner of the elections. Peru has been embroiled in violent protests since the removal from office and arrest of former President Pedro Castillo earlier this month. Castillo was trying to dissolve congress and rule by decree after lawmakers sought to impeach him. At least twenty one people have so far died in clashes with security forces. Boluarte took office on December seventh shortly after Castillo’s ouster.
