Iran-China strategic partnership

Iran and China have signed sixteen MoUs to kick-start implementing the twenty-five-year roadmap for the two countries’ strategic partnership. This is the first step Tehran and Beijing have taken in line with their long-term cooperation agreement.

EU gas price cap

European energy ministers once again fail to overcome deep differences and reach a compromise over a cap on natural gas prices. The EU member states are deeply divided as to whether there should be a cap at all. Another outstanding issue is at what price such a cap should be placed. The measure basically aims to avoid dramatic price spikes in the face of a turmoil in energy markets caused by the Ukraine war. Countries including Germany, Austria and the Netherlands are against a price cap. They fear it could divert much-needed gas cargoes from Europe and further disrupt energy markets. Pro-cap countries including Greece, Belgium, Italy and Poland say it would shield their economies from high energy prices. The EU energy ministers will meet again next week for a compromise.

Peru political crisis

Peru’s former President Pedro Castillo, who was removed from office and arrested, insists he would never give up his cause. Castillo has called on the police and military to QUOTE stop killing people thirsty for justice and lay down arms. The former president was apparently referring to his supporters who took to the streets, demanding Castillo’s immediate release. Seven people have been killed in the country in recent days during clashes between protesters and police. Castillo was arrested last Wednesday after he attempted to dissolve congress and rule by decree. The former president and his family are being investigated for alleged corruption. Castillo has also appealed against his detention, but to no avail.
