UNSC unofficial meeting example of US abuse of international mechanisms: Iran

Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs slams the US dual standards at an unofficial UNSC meeting on Iran.

Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has slammed the US dual standards at an unofficial UNSC meeting on Iran, noting that Washington misuses international mechanisms to serve its own interests.

In a statement, the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the informal meeting of the United Nations Security Council, which was held at the request of the United States and Albania as members of the said council to look into the latest riots that took place in Iran, “is a clear example of the abuse of international mechanisms by the American government for its illegal purposes and meddling in internal affairs of other states.”

“The US, in an uncivilized and undemocratic manner, did not allow any opponent member states to give a speech,” the statement read, at the time only a few guests, a few of its allied countries and itself were allowed to express their opinion.

In the meeting, which was not welcomed by member states, ambassadors from the US and Albania were the only high-ranking officials present.

Preventing 19 member countries from expressing their thoughts and reading their statements that were in favor of Iran, according to the statement, “proved that the US administration is pursuing media dictatorship against independent countries even at the UN.”

“The meeting showed that the US misuses international mechanisms, especially the UNSC, to put political pressure on independent states, which distorts multilateralism and international cooperation,” the statement went on to read.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry statement pointed out to US rights violation, saying, “While the US has a long history of violation of human rights, Washington has always proved to be unconcerned whether human rights are applied or not and has tried to use human rights as a tool to pursue its political agenda.”

“The Islamic Republic views the US’s measure as meddling in the internal affairs of independent countries, which violates the UN Charter,” it further explained.

Moreover, the Ministry said the Islamic Republic of Iran, which is committed to cultural and civilized values and implements human rights in line with international law and recognizes the right to peaceful gathering “condemns foreign intervention and ill-wished media campaigns, which triggers violence and riot.”

Earlier on Thursday, Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Amir-Saeed Iravani slammed US claims that the UNSC meeting was held to back human rights, at the time the Iranian people have been suffering from the US’s cruel sanctions for tens of years, which include food and medicine embargo.

Earlier in October, US President Joe Biden voiced support for riots in the country, made an interventionist statement, and sought encouragement of violence.

Street violence erupted in the country after the death of Mahsa Amini, 22, in a hospital days after she was detained by police. An investigative report by the Iranian Parliament has concluded that the 22‐year‐old woman was neither assaulted during her transfer to the police center in the capital Tehran, where she fell into a coma nor hit while being held there.

The findings, however, question the effectiveness of the first medical response she received.

Iran’s Shura Council confirmed last month that individuals linked to foreign organizations, intelligence services, and terrorist groups have had a hand in fomenting the recent riots.

On the same note, the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence announced on September 30 the arrest of more than 250 people in connection to the riots, including 9 foreigners. It is reported that "foreign citizens from Germany, Poland, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Sweden, and others were arrested on the scenes and behind the scenes of the riots."
