Israel's Iron Dome activated after rocket fire from Gaza: Report

File photo shows the Israeli regime's Iron Dome anti-missile system in action during Tel Aviv's fourth major war on the Gaza Strip.

A number of rockets have reportedly been fired from the direction of the Gaza Strip towards the occupied territories, prompting activation of the Israeli regime's Iron Dome anti-missile system.

Several projectiles were fired towards the southern part of the occupied Palestinian territories on Thursday, the Palestinian Information Center news agency reported.

The incoming fire put the Iron Dome in action and set off warning sirens across the Israeli regime's illegal settlements in the area, it added.

According to Israeli regime sources, the sirens went off across several illegal Israeli settlements, including Nirim and Kedumim.

Hebrew-language sources, meanwhile, attributed the attack to the Gaza-based Palestinian resistance movement of the Islamic Jihad.

They alleged that the movement had fired the rockets in reaction to earlier assassination of one of the commanders of the al-Quds Brigades, the Islamic Jihad's military wing, in the city of Jenin in the northern part of the occupied territories.

The Islamic Jihad is yet to react to the claims.

Last May, the group and its fellow Gaza-headquartered resistance movement of Hamas fired around 4,000 rockets towards the occupied territories as means of defending the coastal enclave in the face of Tel Aviv's fourth major war on it.

The Thursday rocket attack came hours after the Israeli regime's forces killed at least four Palestinians across the Israeli-occupied West Bank, including the Old City of the holy city of al-Quds.

Late last month, the United Nations special coordinator for "the Middle East Peace Process," Tor Wennesland, warned that "2022 is on course to be the deadliest year for Palestinians in the West Bank since the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs began systematically tracking Palestinian fatalities in 2005.”

"Near-daily instances of violence, [are] unfolding against a backdrop of unabated Israeli settlement expansion, evictions of Palestinians, and home demolitions,” Wennesland further underlined at the time.
