Support for joining Russia
Voting has ended in four Ukrainian regions in referendums on accession to Russia. Moscow says its main concern is saving the residents of those regions. The voting took place in the self-proclaimed republics of Luhansk and Donetsk in the east, as well as the Russian-controlled parts of Kherson and Zhaporizhia. Russian media say first partial results show at least 96-percent of the residents are in favor of joining Russia. Moscow has already said it will give full protection to the regions if they vote to become part of the country. Western countries have slammed the votes as illegal and a sham, saying they will not accept the outcome, whatever it may be. The European Union has warned of consequences for the organizers of the votes.
UK economic crisis
The head of Britain’s opposition Labour Party has blamed Prime Minister Liz Truss for losing control over the country’s economy. Addressing the party's annual conference, Keir Starmer slammed the new government’s economic policies. He also said that his party is ready to steer the country out of the current economic turmoil. The remarks came just days after a tax-slashing plan by the government sparked criticism. The plan proposes a cut in taxes, including for the highest earners. The revelation also saw the British pound plunging to an unprecedented low against the dollar.

Millions of mourners have gathered in Iran’s holy city of Mashhad to mark the martyrdom anniversary of 8th Shia Imam, Ali bin Musa al-Reza. Every year on Imam Reza's martyrdom anniversary, his holy shrine gets jam-packed with pilgrims, with thousands of Iranians travelling on foot for days to reach the northeastern city. Mashhad also hosts thousands of foreign pilgrims who travel this time around to pay tribute to the sacred figure. Imam Reza was martyred in 818 AD. Historical accounts suggest, Imam Reza was invited by then tyrant Abbasid ruler Ma’moun from Medina to Mashhad but poisoned him to death. The mass mourning ceremonies are a true testament to the long-standing love people have for Imam Reza.
