Israel’s refusal to join NPT

Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations has denounced Israel’s refusal to join the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Majid Takht-Ravanchi says Israel, which possesses nuclear warheads, is unwilling to sign the NPT. He said the regime also rejects calls for inspections of its nuclear facilities by the UN nuclear watchdog. The Iranian diplomat also highlighted the importance of a Middle East free of nuclear weapons. Takht-Ravanchi is attending the Tenth Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. Israel pursues a policy of deliberate ambiguity about its nuclear weapons program. The regime is estimated to possess 200 to 400 nuclear warheads in its arsenal, making it the sole possessor of non-conventional arms in the Middle East region.

UK rising energy costs

Fear grows over looming fuel poverty in the U-K as the government announces an 80-percent rise in electricity and gas bills. Regulator Ofgem said the energy price cap will increase to 42 hundred dollars per year from the current 23 hundred dollars. It blamed the Russia-Ukraine war for the soaring costs. The new measure will take effect in October. Head of Ofgem Jonathan Brearley warned that prices are likely to surge again in winter. The CEO urged the next British prime minister, who has yet to be elected, to take decisive action in accordance with what he called an upcoming fuel crisis. Britons are also grappling with soaring food prices with inflation now at a 40-year-high above 10 percent.

Trump’s home search affidavit

The US Justice Department is set to release on Friday a document explaining the justification for an FBI search of former president Donald Trump’s Florida estate. The document being released is the redacted form of an affidavit, or sworn statement, that the FBI submitted to a judge so it could obtain a warrant to search Trump’s property. On August 8, FBI agents searched Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home, seizing more than 20 boxes, some containing top secret files. Trump has denied any wrongdoing and has described the search as politically motivated and unlawful. He has also called for the full affidavit to be released.
