Palestinian inmates hunger strike

Palestinian prisoners resume mass hunger strike action to protest mistreatment in Israeli jails. The detainees say their two-week action also aims to protest repeated inspection of cells by Israeli prison guards. The inmates say Israel’s actions violate its March agreement with the Palestinian Commission of Detainees' Affair. The agreement ended the previous mass hunger strike by thousands of Palestinian prisoners. The commission now says it will not discourage the prisoners from claiming their rights and it’s ready to confront any violations by the Israeli prison service.

US foot-dragging

Iran says the US is to blame for the delay in an agreement on the revival of the 2015 nuclear deal. Foreign ministry spokesman Nasser Kan’ani says Washington is dragging its feet to give a response to the draft text proposed by the European Union. Kan’ani says Iran responded to the EU’s proposal in a constructive manner and has shown enough flexibility in the talks. But he says a few very important issues remain to be settled. The spokesman says the US is responsible for the current situation and needs to show the real will to restore the nuclear accord. Tehran submitted its response to the EU’s proposal a week ago. The US, however, says it is still studying Iran’s response.

US-South Korea muscle-flexing

The US and South Korea begin their biggest combined drills since 2018, a move likely to draw angry reactions from North Korea. The exercises run for nearly 10 days. They include large-scale field training, abandoned under the previous South Korean administration to make room for peace. More details are yet to be released. But such wargames have involved the deployment of aircraft, warships, and tanks, as well as tens of thousands of troops in the past. South Korea and the US say such drills are purely defensive. But North Korea sees them as a rehearsal for invasion. The maneuvers have also pushed Pyongyang to fire a blitz of missiles this year. These include the first launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile since 2017.
