Israel bombs Gaza

Israel keeps pounding the Gaza Strip with airstrikes. The fresh air raids that took place a short while ago have left at least two people dead. The attack targeted the Jabalia camp and the city of Khan Yunis. Several people have also been injured. This brings to 34 the number of Palestinians killed since Friday. The toll includes eight children. The air raids have also wounded over 250 others. In response, the Islamic Jihad has fired hundreds of rockets at Tel Aviv and settlements across the occupied West Bank. The movement says it will not engage in any mediation efforts until after it avenges the Israeli killings and the assassination of its leaders.

Muharram mourning ceremonies

Millions of Iranians are marking Tasu’a as part of mourning ceremonies, commemorating the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad. Tasu'a is the 9th day of the lunar month of Muharram, a day before Ashura, which marks the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein, the third Shia imam. Tasu’a is the day Imam Hussein and his companions were besieged by the enemy during the Battle of Karbala. Every year, black-clad mourners attend mosques or parade in the streets, for rituals that involve rhythmic chanting and beating of their chests, and reciting elegies in honor of Imam Hussein. The Imam and seventy-two of his comrades were martyred after fighting thousands of soldiers of the second Umayyid caliph, Yazid, in the Karbala desert in today's Iraq, in 680 AD.
