Bridgeton incident: Historic humiliation of US

On July 24, 1987, a special IRGC unit under the command of General Nader Mahdavi laid a string of some ten mines on the passage of the US-flagged super oil tanker, Bridgeton. Although it was under American heavy escort, Bridgeton collided with a mine 13 miles west of Farsi Island. The explosion caused a 43-square-meter dent in the body of the oil tanker.

The Bridgeton incident is seen as a great victory for Iran and a historic humiliation for Washington as it demonstrated that the Iranian forces, already engaged in a frustrating war, could inflict heavy blows on the so-called most powerful army in the world.
