Iran Syria ties

Syria’s president has hailed Iran as part of the solution to problems in the region in his meeting with Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in Damascus. Bashar al-Assad said collective regional efforts are needed to resolve problems in the region, noting Damascus would welcome any solution that would keep Syria away from war. The Iranian minister, for his part, condemned Israeli violations of Syria’s territorial integrity. He said the silence of Western countries, which claim to advocate human rights, exposes their double standards. Regarding Turkey’s plan to launch a military operation inside Syria, Amir-Abdollahian said Iran understands Turkey’s security concerns, but opposes any form of military action in the Arab country.

Hezbollah drone operation

Lebanon’s Hezbollah resistance movement says it has launched three drones toward an offshore gas field in the Mediterranean. This after the Israeli regime said it had intercepted drones over the area. In a statement, the group said the drones were launched toward the disputed Karish field for reconnaissance missions. Hezbollah said the mission was accomplished and the message was delivered. Israel has said it intends to extract natural gas from the field. Hezbollah and high ranking Lebanese officials, however, have repeatedly warned they would not remain silent in the face of the Israeli regime’s efforts to plunder Lebanon's maritime gas resources.

Russia-Ukraine war

Moving on to the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, which is grinding through its fifth month. Fierce fighting is underway in Ukraine’s east as Russian forces push to gain control of the Donbas region. Russian troops and their allies have completely encircled the flashpoint city of Lysychansk, the last major Ukrainian holdout in Luhansk region. That according to a spokesman for pro-Russia forces. The new development comes a week after the Russian army took over the neighboring city of Severodonetsk marking Kyiv's biggest battlefield setback over the past month. To the south, powerful explosions rocked Mykolaiv early on Saturday. Local authorities say the reason for the blasts is unknown. On Friday, 21 people were killed when missiles hit an apartment building in the southern Odessa region. Ukrainian officials blame Russia but Moscow denies striking the building.
