A four-year-old girl in the southeastern US state of Louisiana has died after her grandmother allegedly forced her to drink a bottle of whiskey, police said on Saturday.

Sgt. L'Jean McKneely, a police spokesperson in Baton Rouge, told reporters that the girl's grandmother, Roxanne Record, 53, and mother, Kadjah Record, 29, were arrested Friday, for first-degree murder.

The girl's blood alcohol content was 0.680%, a "lethal dosage”, more than eight times the .08% driving limit for an adult, according to the arrest warrant.

A level of .25% can cause alcohol poisoning, and anything higher than .40% can lead to a coma or death, according to a University of Notre Dame chart.

Sgt. L’Jean McKneely, a police spokesperson, told news outlets the little girl’s mother and grandmother were arrested on Friday, each on a charge of first-degree murder.

Roxanne, in the presence of Kadjah, had made the girl drink a bottle of whiskey, possibly as a mistake.

“During the course of the investigation detectives learned that the [victim’s] grandmother forced her to consume a bottle of alcohol (Whiskey) while the mother watched,” police reported.

Record told police that she “messed up and that she wanted to take full responsibility for the death of the victim," the warrants stated.

"The defendant [Roxanne Record] stated that this went too far and that she ruined everyone's lives," but didn't elaborate, the warrants said.

Full details of the incident have not yet been released and the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services has refused to comment on the specifics of the case.

"State law prevents our department from commenting on, or even acknowledging the existence of, a potential investigation of abuse or neglect involving a child,” the agency said in a statement.

“If there is an investigation, state laws make the entire process – from report to investigation to an outcome – confidential.”
