UK court issues formal order to extradite Julian Assange to US
A court in the United Kingdom (UK) has issued a formal order to extradite WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to the United States, where he could face a lifetime in prison for espionage charges.
The extradition order was issued by the chief magistrate Paul Goldspring during a seven-minute hearing on Wednesday.
The decision for extradition now rests with Interior Minister Priti Patel.
Assange, who has the right of appeal, appeared by video link during the Westminster Magistrates court hearing.
The brief hearing on Wednesday took place after the Supreme Court last month refused Assange’s appeal against his extradition. His lawyers, however, have until May 18 to make representations to Patel and could potentially launch further appeals on other points in the case.
Assange is wanted in the US on 18 criminal charges related to the WikiLeaks’ release of 500,000 secret military files of confidential US military records, including classified military and diplomatic files in 2010 about the US bombing campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq that proved highly embarrassing for Washington.
If convicted, Assange faces up to 175 years in prison.
