Pakistan Prime Minister dismissed

Pakistan’s Prime Minister has been ousted after losing a no-confidence vote in the parliament, following weeks of political turmoil. Khan’s dismissal comes after multiple adjournments and hours of impasse over the motion. The controversy started last week, after Khan’s allies tried to avoid the no-confidence vote by dissolving the parliament’s lower house. Then, the Supreme Court interfered and ordered the parliament to reconvene and go through with the vote. Khan accepted the verdict, but said he is falling victim to US-backed regime-change plans. Opposition parties accuse Khan of failing to help the economy and fight corruption. Pakistan’s parliament will meet on Monday to elect a new Prime Minister. Opposition leader Shehbaz Sharif is the favorite candidate for the post.

Ukraine refugee crisis

The number of Ukrainian refugees fleeing war in their country has topped 4.4 million. This according to the UN refugee agency. The UNHCR has registered nearly 60,000 refugees in one day. This is Europe’s biggest refugee crisis since World War 2. Poland has been their main destination from which many of them travel to other European countries. Ninety percent of those who have fled Ukraine are women and children. Men of military age are not allowed to leave. The UN says around 210,000 non-Ukrainians have also fled the country. The world body also estimates that over 7 million people have been displaced within the country. That means around one third of the Ukrainian population has been forced to flee their homes since the war began on February 24.
