Gazans hold sit-in for Palestinians in Israeli jails

Rights activists and families of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons held a sit-in inside the office of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Gaza.

They protested Tel-Aviv’s inhumane treatment of thousands of Palestinian political prisoners in Israeli jails.

Their show of solidarity comes as around 500 administrative detainees have been refusing to show up for their military court hearings for almost three months.

Administrative detainees are incarcerated based on secret evidence without charge or trial for long periods of time.

Palestinian prisoners, including women and children as well as elderly prisoners, are kept in 24 Israeli jails and detention centers and are subjected to torture and psychological pressures by the Israeli prison authorities.

Palestinian prisoners are denied basic human rights as Tel-Aviv continues to violate international laws and norms regarding the treatment of prisoners.

Families of the prisoners say they will continue their weekly sit-ins until all Palestinian prisoners are set free.

People here consider Palestinian prisoners inside Israeli jails as political prisoners and freedom fighters. Israel currently incarcerates around 5,000 Palestinians.
