Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in a telephonic conversation with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned Washington against including Chinese Taipei in its Indo-Pacific strategy.

Wang said China is willing to effectively manage differences and stabilize relations with the US in line with the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation put forward by Chinese President Xi Jinping.

However, he asserted that Washington had launched the so-called new version of the "Indo-Pacific Strategy," categorizing China as the top regional challenge.

He said the attempt to incorporate the strategy of "using Taiwan to contain China" into the US regional strategy was sending a “wrong signal” of beleaguering and containing China.

The top Chinese diplomat said relations cannot be defined simply by competition, adding that trumpeting of a long-term fierce competition with China by some US officials was likely to evolve into a full-blown confrontation between the two countries.

China has sovereignty over Chinese Taipei, and under the “One China” policy, almost all world countries, including the US, recognize that sovereignty, meaning that they should not have direct diplomatic contact with the self-proclaimed government in Taipei.

Beijing regularly describes the island as the most sensitive issue in its ties with Washington.

Earlier this month, the White House said it would commit more diplomatic and security resources with partners inside and outside the Indo-Pacific to maintain peace and stability in the strait dividing Taiwan from China.

On Monday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said they would put sanctions on Raytheon Technologies and Lockheed Martin in response to a $100-million deal approved by Washington for the maintenance of Taiwan’s missile defense systems by the two companies.

The US has been selling weapons to the Chinese Taipei and staging shows of military force around it.

More recently, the US has pursued close diplomatic contact with the self-ruled island, in violation of Chinese sovereignty and its own stated policy.

China has in response ramped up military patrols and drills near the island, asserting its sovereignty.
