Saudi war on Yemen
Saudi Arabia launches another airstrike on Yemen, this time targeting the Sana’a province. At least one civilian was killed in the latest attack that took place in the wee hours of Friday morning. It followed another strike that hit Hajjah province. There are no details about the Hajjah attack so far. Saudi Arabia and its allies launched a devastating war on Yemen in March 2015, wreaking the country’s key infrastructure. The war has left hundreds of thousands of Yemenis dead, mostly civilians. Millions more have been displaced, while half of the population faces starvation. The UN has described it as the largest humanitarian crisis in the world.
Eastern Ukraine flare-up
Pro-Russian forces based in Ukraine’s eastern region of Donbas say government troops launched an artillery barrage on a village near Donetsk City. The pro-Russia forces also accused the Ukrainian military of firing artillery and mortars in two other places, and violating a ceasefire in Donbas. The Ukrainian military also accused the pro-Russian secessionists of truce violations, saying a soldier had been injured in shelling. The Donbass ceasefire came into effect in February 2015 to put an end to fighting that broke out in the restive region a year earlier. The pro-Russian forces seek independence from Ukraine. Russia has expressed concern over the latest flare-up taking place amid soaring tensions between Moscow and the West. Western countries accuse Russia of planning to invade Ukraine. Moscow denies the allegation.
Paris metro strike
Transport workers in the French capital Paris have gone on a major strike, bringing most of the city’s subway network to a grinding halt. Eight metro lines are completely out of service, while six others are operating only partially. The French transport minister has called on companies to make maximum use of work from home (WFH) while walkouts continue. Employees of RATP, the Paris rail and metro system, are unhappy with their wage hike this year. The government has offered to increase their pay by 2.7 percent, but they’re demanding 3 percent. The French capital has been hit by a number of major strikes in the transport sector in the past few years.
