Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have held a sit-in in front of the Red Cross office to support Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails and detention centers.

The move comes as thousands of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails continue to suffer from inhumane treatment and are being denied their basic rights, including access to proper medical care during the coronavirus pandemic.

Last month Israeli regime forces arrested 456 Palestinians in the occupied West Bank including women and minors. Hamas movement demanded international protection for Palestinian prisoners.

Currently some five thousand Palestinian political prisoners are being held in 24 Israeli prisons and detention centers.

The plight of Palestinian prisoners has worsened amid the coronavirus pandemic and around 400 of them have been infected with the deadly virus.

Securing the release of prisoners is a highly emotive issue for Palestinians who regard them as prisoners of war and as symbols of resistance against the Israeli occupation.

Solidarity with Palestinian prisoners has been a top priority for activists in Gaza who say they are determined to stand by the prisoners for as long as it takes.

Latest statistics show that Israel has imprisoned nearly one million Palestinians since 1967. Currently thousands of prisoners are kept inside Israeli jails including women and children.
