“US in decline”
Iranian president Ebrahim Raeisi says the US threats and sanctions can no longer sway independent nations as American power is in decline. Raeisi has made the remarks during a phone call with Nicaraguan president Daniel Ortega. The Iranian president says Washington cannot impose its wishes on Tehran and Managua because both countries rely on their people’s votes and support. He also says the two nations have always withstood the excessive demands of hegemonic powers. For his part, Ortega has highlighted Iran and Nicaragua’s fight against US imperialism.
General Soleimani’s assassination
A senior Iranian official says the US was not the only country that was involved in the assassination of top Iranian commander Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani. Secretary-general of Iran’s Human Rights Office, Kazem Gharibabadi says the legal proceedings on the case are underway in Iran as well as in Iraq where the attack took place. He says a joint committee of Iranian and Iraqi judiciary members has been formed and is expected to present their findings soon to lay the ground for a criminal investigation. Gharibabadi says Iran is also pursuing the assassination case through international and human rights organizations at the same time. Lieutenant General Soleimani was killed in a US drone strike near Baghdad International Airport on January 3, 2020.
Attack on Palestinians
Israeli settlers open indiscriminate fire at Palestinians in the occupied East Al-Quds neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah. According to Palestinian media, Israeli forces stand by during the shooting incident, taking no action to stop it. The Israeli forces also reportedly detain a 13-year-old boy from the neighborhood. Sheikh Jarrah has been the scene of crackdowns by Israeli police on Palestinians. Israeli authorities forcibly try to evict dozens of Palestinian families from the neighborhood, claiming that its homes belong to Israelis. Palestinians however, accuse Israel of land grab. The move is seen as part of Israel’s efforts to change the demographic character of the occupied territories.
