Russia denies report on controlling shares in Iranian gas project
Russia’s embassy in Tehran has rejected as fake a recent report which suggests Moscow will have the dominant share of the development works for a newly-discovered Iranian gas field in the Caspian Sea.
The embassy issued a statement on Wednesday denying reports that Russia and Iran had reached an final agreement on the Chalous gas field.
Russia’s ambassador to Tehran Levan Jagaryan said the reports have been fabricated by "special services" in the United States with the intention to impact relations between Russia and iran.
“such fake-news are formed by the USA special services in order to harm friendly Russian-Iranian relations. These attempts will not be successful,” said Jagaryan in a post on the official Twitter page of the Russian embassy in Iran.
The statement came a day after OilPrice.com claimed in a report that two Russian companies had been awarded with 40% of shares in a long-term development contract for Chalous gas field, a recent discovery in the Iranian waters in the Caspian Sea.
The report claimed that Russia’s share of the gas field, which it claimed holds over 7 trillion cubic meters of natural gas, would further consolidate Moscow’s control over the natural gas market in Europe.
However, Iranian authorities have previously denied estimates provided by OilPrice.com and other sources about the proven reserves of gas in Chalous reserve.
They have insisted that nothing has yet been decided about the role of international companies, including those from China or Russia, in future development works in the area.
The reports come as Iran and Russia are planning to renew a long-term cooperation agreement that has been in place since 2001.
