Iran anti-US rallies
Today is a very important day in Iran’s history. It’s named the National Day against Global Arrogance, and Iranians commemorate the occasion by holding rallies to condemn US policies. Crowds of people have started gathering on the streets, in different cities, in a show of their anger at the US atrocities directed at their country, over the past four decades. In the capital Tehran, the protesters are gathering just outside a building, that used to be the US embassy, before the Islamic Revolution. 42 years ago, on this day, a group of university students took over of the embassy building, amidst anti-US anger. Traditionally on this day, chants against the US can be heard from protesters, who support resistance against Washington’s plots. Since the 1979 takeover of the compound, Iranians have been marking the occasion every year by holding rallies.
Lebanon-Saudi Arabia row
The deputy chief of Hezbollah says Saudi Arabia’s recent approach toward Lebanon is meant to divert attention from its failure in the Yemen war. Sheikh Naeem Qassem says the resistance movement will not allow Saudi Arabia to interfere in Lebanon’s political affairs, including the formation of its cabinet. Qassem also says the kingdom has shown in numerous ways that it opposes Hezbollah’s presence in the Lebanese government. He has urged Riyadh to apologize to Beirut for what he calls immoral moves. The comments seem to be in response to the Saudi foreign minister who has said dealing with Lebanon is pointless due to Hezbollah's dominance in the country.
US Taiwan strategy
Taiwan is looking to hone the combat skills of its reserve forces next year, by providing them with more extensive military training. According to the Defense Ministry, mandatory refresher training for some reserve troops will be increased to 14 days, from about a week at present. The reservists will be required to more than double the number of bullets they fire in shooting exercises. Also combat training will be extended to 56 hours, from only half a day now. Tensions are at a high between China and Taiwan. Beijing views the island as part of its territory. But Taiwan is seeking independence, and says will defend its sovereignty if there's an armed conflict. Beijing is also at odds with Washington over its military exchanges and contacts with Taiwan.
