'Sleepy Joe’ trending after Biden snoozes during international conference
"Sleepy Joe" has become a popular social media trend after the US president apparently dozed off at an international conference in Scotland.
Joe Biden was filmed snoozing on Monday as delegates spoke at the opening of the United Nations COP26 climate conference in Glasgow, Scotland.
Biden appeared to doze off while listening to South African activist Eddie Ndopu as he stressed the importance of the climate summit and warned that global warming threatened “our ability to grow food and even to survive.”
“I call on you to commit to concrete actions to stop the destruction of this magnificent planet ... This conference is one of the most important meetings in history,” Ndopu went on to say as Biden’s eyelids were shut.
“You have the chance to make decisions and reach agreements which will affect the lives of generations to come. You are in a position of extraordinary power. You can change forever the trajectory we are on. You can make a world that is once again full of hope, not fear,” Ndopu added.
Biden’s aide woke him just in time for the applause. The 78-year old Biden then rubbed his eyes.
"Sleepy Joe" and SleepyCreepy Joe" were the nicknames former Republican president Donald Trump used when referring to his Democratic rival in his campaigns before the 2020 US presidential election.
"Biden went to Europe saying Global Warming is his highest priority, and then promptly fell asleep, for all the world to see, at the Conference itself," Trump said in a statement shortly after the video emerged.
The former president added that Biden "fell asleep" because he could not bear to hear more about global warming. Trump has claimed that global warming is a hoax pursued by the Russians and Chinese, meant to weaken the US economy.
